“My family and I delivered a suitcase of medical supplies (generously donated through Not Just Tourists) to La Clinica de Salud in Barrio Blanco, Cabarete, Dominican Republic.
The community of Barrio Blanco is in a dire situation. Most of the community members live in shacks with no electricity nor plumbing. Most of the inhabitants are unemployed, most dwellings are a single room, and have three generations of family living in the same cramped space. The generosity of two groups has lead to several houses being built, as well as a school, and a medical clinic. All of the efforts, building materials, and medical services are provided are by donation. There is still a lot of need in Barrio Blanco.
La Clinica de Salud is not open every day, so we contacted one of the groups (Providing Opportunity) ahead of time, to arrange the donation of the medical supplies.
When we were dropped off at the main road (the only road) into the barrio, we were greeted warmly by a neighborhood woman. She welcomed us into her home, to wait until the clinic was open for patients a few minutes later. She spoke almost no English, and we spoke almost no Spanish, but the smiles were on everyone’s face.
The doctor at the clinic, Dr. Mirian Placiendo, was happy to see us and very appreciative of the medical supplies. Every little bit helps.
I am so happy that we had the opportunity to make a little bit of difference in the lives of people who are not as fortunate as we are. Taking a suitcase of medical supplies was very easy, from start to finish.
I would highly recommend this rewarding experience to anyone who has the time and space and desire to bring aid to other people in other parts of the world.”
