A huge thank you to Greg for taking 2 suitcases to Cuba! Sounds like he had a really meaningful trip… <3
“Thank-you very much for letting me help by bringing two suitcases of medical supplies to the General Hospital in Gibara, Cuba (Nov. 2016). This was my third trip. I fondly remember the first time I made the 80 km trip from our resort at Guardalavaca. As I pulled up to the hospital, the doorman let everyone at the front desk know that donations unexpectedly arrived by exclaiming “CANADA! CANADA!”
As before, I picked up the suitcases from Cuban customs without problems. I rented a scooter, and rode rough paved and gravel roads through beautiful countryside. I arrived at the hospital, and was warmly welcomed. The donations were graciously accepted, and the Hospital Administrator formally read the “Que Es No Solo Turistas Toronto?” page to an assembled group of nurses, doctors and surgeons. I was then given a tour of the hospital’s second floor – it’s being re-built after a devastating hurricane.
Back at the resort, a hotel worker recognized me from a description given to him by his parents. He said they live beside the hospital, and they phoned him with news that medical supplies were delivered; and people in the neighbourhood were very happy to be receiving medical attention.”
