James delivers medical supplies to Varadero

Not Just Tourists Manitoba – Winnipeg wishes to thank Travellers James and Jeannine for taking supplies to Varadero, Cuba!

This is their story:

“Our cab driver was terrific. He was sent to pick us up at the airport by our hostel hosts. We decided to ask if he could take us to the clinic in Cardenas first and settled on his fee. Gas is in short supply in Cuba and some gas stations were closed as a result. So our driver obliged, found the clinic and acted as our interpreter.
At the clinic, we met one of the doctors and she led us to their administrative office, not much larger than a closet, about 3 m x 3m. They clearly know where their priorities are! We met 4 clinicians in all and they were very grateful for everything you sent. They asked if some supplies could be shared with another clinic so we explained that we hoped they would allocate things as needed, we have no desire to control what they do with everything.
Our trip was excellent, we planned to only go for one week so we took only carryon luggage. This made it easy for us to check the suitcase you provided at no additional cost. We felt this was important because of the shortage of supplies across the island.
While Cuba has ties with many countries, they don’t have money to buy what is needed. Their medical training is good but it must be difficult to tend to patients when you have no supplies. The doctor asked if we wanted the suitcase back, but we said no, they can keep it.
We met a few Canadians while we enjoyed the beach, swimming and local restaurants. One couple from Vancouver had heard of NJT, while those from Quebec had not. We spread the word whenever we could. Next year we plan to return, hopefully with another suitcase from NJT.”
Truly,
James and Jeannine
