“University Health Network cardiac surgeon Dr. RJ Cusimano and UHN anesthesiologist Dr. Ian Randall brought two suitcases of cardiac surgery specific equipment to Ethiopia. Dr. Cusimano has come to help start an off-pump coronary artery bypass program (OPCAB) at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This hospital is a tertiary teaching hospital and the biggest hospital in Ethiopia. Unfortunately not that much equipment is available. Some things (both basic and advanced) run with donations at this institution. It is challenging for the hospital to get basic supplies to start an OPCAB program for the country but it is coming along one step at a time, with special thanks to the generous donations by Not Just Tourists Toronto.
The hospital is also setting up tents in the event of a COVID-2019 outbreak with 200 N-95 masks donated by Not Just Tourists Toronto.
